Do you want or need to make home improvements? Home improvements can lead us down a rabbit hole of thinking about cost, time, hiring professionals, etc. It doesn’t need to be that way! We’ve put together a list of home improvement ideas that you can do yourself while on a budget.

1. Paint

A fresh coat of paint will go a long way! Painting walls, tile floors, or even a fireplace can completely change the aesthetic of your home. Buying a bucket of paint is a relatively low cost, and you can do the work yourself within a few days.

2. Improve Storage

Improving or optimizing storage space can transform your home. Try installing shelving in the living room for books or pictures. You could purchase some baskets for blankets or toys. Storage is essential in the kitchen too. Invest in a few low-cost shelving units for the fridge, freezer, or pantry to optimize space.

Your entryway is the first place to stop clutter. Install hooks for backpacks, keys, and coats, so you have somewhere to put them besides the back of a chair or the kitchen counter. You could also install a bench with storage baskets underneath for shoes.

One of the most prominent places that could use some organization is a closet. Utility closets and bedroom closets alike. Closets can quickly become a disaster, especially when you try three different outfits before deciding to wear the first one you tried on. Use bins, boxes, and shelving to organize your closet. The point of optimizing storage space is to get things off the ground and put things in a logical place. When too many things are on the floor, your home can appear messy and disorganized. One of the biggest things to consider is implementing storage ideas that you will keep up with. There’s no point in installing shelving in your closet, for example, if you know your clothes will end up in a messy pile. Maybe a basket works better for you. Think of storage ideas that you will commit to keeping organized.

3. Spruce Your Doorstep

The curb appeal is real! Spruce up your doorstep with plants, outdoor lighting, unique house numbers, a cute doormat, or a letterbox. It’s all in the details. If you’re feeling extra motivated, you can reframe the door or paint it a color that matches the interior to create an overall aesthetic.

4. Professionally Clean Your Carpets

Did you know carpets hold dirt, dust, hair, allergens, stains, and grit? Vacuuming will only remove half of that. Professionally cleaning your carpet will help prevent mold growth, especially in humid areas. Deep cleaning your carpets every once in a while will also make them last longer.

5. DIY Window Shades

The amount of options for window shades makes it tough to decide on a good one. Instead, try to DIY a window shade! A Roman window shade or interior shutters are low-cost and relatively simple to make yourself.

6. Replace a Shower Head

Nothing can beat a good shower, especially when the water pressure is just right! Installing a new shower head can give you customizable water pressure. A sliding bar model can also be adjusted for various heights. As a bonus, there are versions of showerheads that are more water-efficient.

7. Start a Garden

It doesn’t necessarily need fresh fruits and vegetables (but who would say no to that?). What about a flower garden? Then, you can have fresh flowers to put around the house. Adding greenery to the front and/or back of the house creates natural beauty.

8. Install New Bathroom Ventilation

You know it’s time to replace the bathroom fan if the bathroom mirror is consistently foggy or mold starts to appear in the shower. It’s relatively easy to replace the fan, and your bathroom will be good as new.

9. Add Window Boxes

When you imagine a cute cottage by a lake, do you picture window boxes? I certainly do! Window boxes add charm to the exterior of your home. Not only that, but the floral arrangement attracts birds and butterflies. Window boxes allow you to express your creativity. They are easily customizable with color, floral arrangements, and the size/shape of the box.

10. Install a Programmable Thermostat

Did you know that installing a programmable thermostat can save you money? Maybe not at the beginning, but effectively regulating the temperature in your home can reduce utility costs. Smart thermostats have become a trend in new construction recently. They allow you to adjust the temperature from your phone. This feature is a lifesaver for those of us who have too many things on our minds to remember to set the thermostat. If you’re leaving on vacation and forgot to turn the heat down since you won’t be there, you can do it from your phone instead of eating the bill. When you return from vacation, simply turn the heat back up so you don’t come back to an icebox!

11. Install a Water Filter

Regularly buying plastic water bottles is not only expensive but a waste of plastic. However, we understand the concern over drinking impure tap water. Opting for a water filter is eco-friendly and cost-efficient. There are several options, but did you know that you can install a water filter system under your sink? Check out a DIY guide and get started!

12. Install a Tile Backsplash

A backsplash is another way to express your creativity and give your home a little more charm. Plus, you’re protecting your walls from splashes and spills. Don’t limit yourself to the kitchen! Maybe you can add a backsplash pattern in the laundry room or bathroom. Backsplashes are easy to install and don’t need professional help.

Well, there are 12 easy home improvement ideas for those on a budget. The best part is that most of these can be done in a day or two! There’s no need to waste time and money on home improvement. So, which one are you going to try first?
